Matthew Quintal (1766–1799) was an able seaman and mutineer aboard the HMS Bounty. He was a violent man, receiving lashes for "insolent and mutinous behavior" before the mutiny, personally setting the Bounty on fire after it, and biting off his wife's ear when drunk, leading her to kill herself. In 1799, he was tricked into his death by the last two surviving mutineers, John Adams and Ned Young.
