MAZE: The Mega-Burst Space (original title: MAZE Bakunetsu Jikū) is a Japanese anime created by Slayers storywriter Satoru Akahori.

Main Plot

This is a story about a young woman named Maze who was transported Wizard of Oz-style into a mystical land. There she meets a young princess named Mil Varna who is in danger. Evil empires want her captured, but Maze plans to fight back if only she knows how. However, when the moon goes down, Maze transforms from a lovely young woman into a testosterone-driven man with lots of pent-up aggression. The term in the lands of a transgender transformation is called an Illuminator, and only a few of them exist. Now, Maze must find a way to help Mil and find a way to get back to Earth before anything else goes wrong.

Akahori mixes the fantasy style of The Slayers, mecha style of The Vision of Escaflowne and the gender-bending from Ranma 1/2 all rolled into one.

Characters

Maze

Maze is a young girl from Earth who was transported into a fantasy world. She is the protagonist of the story. She is an Illuminator, a special type of sorcerer that can change in a fashion similar to the yin-yang principle. At night, Maze goes from feminine girl to a boy with hardcore tendencies. When the sun rises, Maze is transformed back into a girl again.

Mil Varna

Mil is a young princess who acts a bit childish but hides a secret power within her. Mil can transform from a child into an adult and summon a magical living armor for her and Maze to battle inside. Mil calls Maze "Big Sister-Brother" as a term of endearment.

Aster and Solude

Aster and Solude are common bandits who look for cheap thrills. Aster is a big man and his partner Solude is a woman who constantly taunts and flirts with the female Maze while trying to repel the come-ons of the male Maze. When they got involved in Maze and Mil's battle, they stop the invaders and join Maze and Mil and become full-fledged fugitives.

Randy

Randy is Mil's fairy and helper who joins Maze and her friends to free Mil's people as well as the world.
