The surname McAtee has its roots in Ireland and Scotland. The earliest variations of the name can be traced back to the Isle of Iona, off the northern coast of Scotland.

The first recorded McAtee's to move to the United States arrived in the colonies sometime prior to 1685. Today, McAtee's can be found through out the United States. Stil, many remain in the British Isles, especially in Wales.

McAtee is derived from the ancient Gaelic name, Mac an t'Saoi, which means "Son of the Scholar". English variations of the name include MacIntyre, McAteer, MacAtee, MacYntie, MacEtye.
