History
The McGavock High School Band has a rich tradition of excellence. Since the school opened in 1971, the McGavock marching band has been named Tennessee State Champions at the Contest of Champions in Murfreesboro, Tennessee 24 times. The band has received first place awards at numerous competitions, including twelve-time Grand Champion at M.T.S.U. “Contest of Champions” – 1972, 1982, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. The McGavock marching band has been named a finalist band in Bands of America Grand National Championships in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, and 1997. The band was named the Bands of America Southeast Regional Champion in 1990, 1995, and 1996. The band was also awarded the internationally acclaimed John Philip Sousa Foundation’s “Sudler Shield Award” in 1994. The McGavock Band was recognized by the National Band Association as one of the “Ten Finest Bands in the United States.”
