McLain State Park is a Michigan state park on the Keweenaw Peninsula, in what is known as Michigan's Copper Country. It is located halfway between Hancock and Calumet.
The park is on Lake Superior's shore, and most of the beach areas are rocky. However, a stretch of land on the edge of the park, near where boats enter the Portage Lake, is sandy and good for swimming. This is the Breakwaters, known to some locals as just the "Breakers."
McLain State Park is also home to a campground, complete with showers and bathrooms. This campground is very popular in the summertime with locals and tourists alike.
During the second week of the fall semester, Michigan Technological University (MTU) cancelles afternoon classes, so that students and facilty can celebrate Keweenaw Day. It is a celebration of the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. For this event everyone heads out to McLain State Park for a day of fun, sun, music, games, and food.
