Meadher

Encyclopedia : M : ME : MEA : Meadher

Meadher - pronounced METH - er. A meadher is a maker of mead. In pre-Norman invasion England, an alpha-numeric character called a "thorn" vaguely resembled a lower case "d" with the stem crossed like a "t". The character was pronounced with a hard "th" sound (as in "thought"). This term has fallen into disfavor in modern times because when spoken, it is sometimes confused with a maker of the drug "meth". A slang term that has started to replace Meadher is Mazer or Mazier. The original meaning of the term Mazer is a cup or vessel for serving or drinking mead.
