Media Player was the predecessor of Windows Media Player, which was originally released as part of Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions, then later bundled with Windows 95 and Windows NT. Since the release of Windows 98 though, Media Player was rebranded as Windows Media Player, then at version 6.4.

Although Microsoft bundles more advanced media players such as Windows Media Player in Windows XP, Media Player is still included with every copy. The Media Player name also lives on in Media Player Classic, a project to create an open source replacement.
