In it's original Japanese format, the latter series - in which the character is called "Master Megatron" - is not written to be a continuation of the previous two, but it is the third part of the "Unicron Trilogy" as conceived by Hasbro, and its English dub treats it as such. Resultant inconsistences between the series have been explained away as reality fluctuations caused by the Unicron-created black hole featured in the series.
