Meguro (目黒区 -ku) is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, Japan. It calls itself Meguro City in English.

Meguro hosts fifteen foreign embassies and consulates. It has a friendship-city relationship with Chongwen District, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

As of 2005, the ward has an estimated population of 255,833 and a density of 16880 persons per km². The total area is 14.70 km².

Geography

Four other special wards surround Meguro. They are Shibuya (to the northeast), Setagaya (to the west), Ota (to the south) and Shinagawa (to the southwest).

History

The Higashiyama shell mound contains remains from the paleolithic, Jomon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods.

The ward was founded on March 15, 1947.

Public elementary and middle schools are operated by the Meguro City Board of Education. Public high schools are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education.
