Mel's Diner

Encyclopedia : M : ME : MEL : Mel's Diner

Founded by Chris Karakosta in San Carlos, FL in 1989, Mel’s Diner is a southwest Florida-based restaurant chain with 10 units.

The restaurant originally set out to mimic the look and feel of Karakosta’s first eatery, the Chicago-based family style diner, Dimitri’s. Before Mel’s, Karakosta owned and operated two other establishments in the southwest Florida area, The Green Onion, and Stevie Tomato’s Sports Page.

In Mel’s, he sought to return to the familiarity and wholesomeness of Dimitri’s. Because of that, each Mel’s Diner store continues to incorporate that same sense of family friendly service, high value and made-from-scratch comfort foods that made the original location such a success.

Recently, the company has been undergoing changes to update its image. Many of the stores are being renovated to reflect a more modern version of a diner by incorporating brick elements and a warmer color scheme. To go along with the new look, Mel’s has also added some gourmet twists to its traditional menu.

Some of the gourmet comfort foods that can be found along with the traditional burgers and fries on the Mel’s menu are spaghetti with unique sauces, chicken marinara, and meatloaf with portabella mushroom sauce.
