Melrose Avenue is a popular shopping street stretching from Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills to Hoover Street in Silver Lake. Its most famous portion is in Hollywood. It runs north of Beverly Boulevard and south of Santa Monica Boulevard.

Around it is a predominantly middle class Jewish neighborhood, Melrose is a home to some of the trendiest restaurants and shops in Los Angeles. It is popular among tourists wishing to see celebrities and experience Hollywood life.

Well-known establishments include, but are not limited to, Patina, the original Johnny Rockets, trendy clothing store Fred Segal, The Improv (comedy club), The Bodhi Tree (popular metaphysical and New Age store), and Morton's. Fairfax High School is located on the corner of Fairfax Avenue and Melrose.

North of the intersection with La Cienega Boulevard is Melrose Place, a small residential portion made famous in the TV show of the same name.

Melrose is also useful as an east-west thoroughfare since it is usually at least four lanes in width, and left turns are prohibited during rush hour.
