Mentone is a bayside suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Kingston. It is known locally for its beautiful beach which extends from the cliffs in Beaumaris & ends at Warrigal Rd where it turns into Parkdale.
Mentone is associated with the Heidelberg School.
Histroy
Mentone was originally founded as a resort town named and named after an Italian resort. In order to keep with the Italian resort theme many sreets in Mentone where named after Italian cities such as Florence St, Venice St and Milan St. The development of Mentone began in the late 1800s. Mentone has now developed into a middle/high income suburb with well developed infrastructure.Shopping
The area has achieved success with shoppers. It is home to a lively shopping area along Como Parade, Balcombe Road and surrounding areas. Nepean Highway is also lined with popular shops. Their is a growing cafe culture in Mentone espcially in the Como Parade shopping area with many Cafe's opened in the main shopping area in recent years. Menotne has hosts numerous high quality food related retailers such as the award winning Sunbeam cake shop.Politics
Mentone is home to the Kingston Council offices. In terms of State and Federal Government Mentone is situated in the Electoral district of Mordialloc for state parliament and the Electoral district of Issacs in the federal party. Current trends show that the majority of Mentone voters support the Liberal party however Mentone is currently represented by Labor members in both state and federal parliament due to the Labor voting tendancies of other suburbs which Mentone is joined in its electoral district.Transport
Mentone is home to the regional general airport Moorabbin Airport which services many private and chartered flights daily. It is also serviced by a variety of Metlink public transport bus and train services.Entertainment/Leisure
Mentone is home to the famous Mentone Hotel a historical building overlooking the bay. The Mentone pub is a very popular venue for a night out especially the "edgy" on Wednesday night when the Hotel is packed with party goers. The beaches and life saving clubs also provide leisure space as does the parkland and oval near the council offices. Mentone is also home to numerous sporting clubs including football, tennis, bowling as well as many gyms.Schools
- Kilbreda College is a Catholic Secondary School for girls, founded in 1904. The school is owned and administered by the Brigidine Sisters
- St Bede's is a Catholic boys high school in Mentone, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is administered by the De La Salle Brothers. Former students include, members of the rock band Jet and Australian cricket player Brad Hodge
