The Mercury Marquis was introduced in 1967 as Mercury's top-line car, similar to the Ford LTD. It was available as a two-door hardtop, four-door pillared hardtop, or the Colony Park station wagon. Early models came with the 429 in³ big-block engine. Later models got either the big-block 460 or the 400 Cleveland, and the 351M was later added. The Grand Marquis was introduced as a luxury trim package for the Marquis in 1975.

1983-86

The models were split in 1983, with the Grand Marquis on the full-sized Panther platform and the Marquis on the mid-size Fox platform. The mid-size Marquis was available with the SOHC 2.3 L four-cylinder as the base engine. 1983 models could have the 3.3 L "Mileage Maker" I6. In 1984, the 3.3 L was dropped in favor of the 3.8 L Essex V6. The 5.0 L Windsor V8 was available in the extremely rare Marquis LTS which was sold only in Canada. The Marquis was produced in Atlanta, Georgia until 1985 and Chicago, Illinois until 1986, when it was replaced by the Mercury Sable.
