The Montego name (presumably derived from Montego Bay, Jamaica) was an intermediate vehicle in Mercury's line. The name had first been used in 1967 on the Meteor Montego, the top trim level in Ford's Canada-only Meteor.

1968

The Montego replaced the intermediate Mercury Comet in 1968 and was replaced by an upsized Mercury Cougar for the 1977 model year. It was essentially a twin of the Ford Torino. The Cyclone was a high performance variant of the Montego through 1971.

2005

Mercury again used the name for their 2005 version of the Ford Five Hundred, which replaced the Mercury Sable in the brand's lineup, and wanted to compete with other new near-luxury sedans launched at the same time (e.g. Buick LaCrosse, Chrysler 300). The new Montego includes an optional all-wheel drive system. The car starts at the MSRP of US$25,000.
