M49 (also known as NGC 4472) is an elliptical galaxy about 60 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1771 and is a member of the Virgo cluster. Only one supernova (SN 1969Q) was reported in this galaxy in June 1969. M49 has two probable satellite galaxies (NGC 4465 and NGC 4467).
