M58 (also known as NGC 4579) is a barred spiral galaxy about 60 million light-years away in the Virgo constellation. Located in the Virgo cluster, it was discovered by Charles Messier in 1779. M58 is one of the brightest galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Two supernovae (SN 1988A & SN 1989M) have been observed in M58.
