Metal Gear Saga Vol. 1 is a documentary DVD, directed by Ryan Payton, that was released as a bonus in North America to those who pre-ordered . It was made available in early March as a pre-order incentive (around two weeks previous to Subsistence's release) from most major gaming retailers. It is a Kojima Productions project and is presented via voiceover by Jack N. Merluzzi.
It consists of one disc with approximatly 30 minutes of game footage, with interviews and commentary from series director Hideo Kojima. Kojima talks about his feelings on the NES port of the original Metal Gear and the original NES game Snake's Revenge, his reasons for creating games that resound with topics that are of real importance (such as nuclear proliferation, cloning, and censorship), and the genesis of the series.
Near the end of the documentary, following up information presented on ', Kojima states that he plans to wrap up all the loose ends from that game in '. These include, but are not limited to:
- The details regarding Revolver Ocelot being manipulated by Liquid Snake's arm.
- What happened to Olga Gurlukovich's child.
- How Vamp survives the events of the game.
- Finally revealing truths regarding the Patriots.
The layout of the documentary starts with Snake Eater, and continues in chronological order through the rest of the games, finishing with Sons of Liberty. Effectively covering the general story line of each of the five released games. The only entry with very little information is , presumably because prior to the release of Subsistence, it has never seen an official North American release.
Extras on the disc consist of two trailers for Metal Gear Solid 4 (from E3 2005 and the Tokyo Game Show 2005), three trailers for Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (E3 2005, Gamers Conference 2005, and Tokyo Game Show 2005), and two trailers for Metal Gear Acid 2 (E3 2005 and Tokyo Game Show 2005).
