- an ecclesiastical 'mother see': Metropolitan archbishop or Metropolitan bishop
- a major city, especially a capital, e.g. in

- * New York, where two major cultural institutions are commonly called 'the Metropolitan': Metropolitan Museum of Art and Metropolitan Opera in New York
- the 'mother country' of an overseas empire, e.g. Metropolitan France (mainland France and Corsica)
- A rapid transit system, in particular:
- * Métro (originally Chemin de Fer Métropolitain) in Paris
- * Metropolitan Railway (now the Metropolitan Line) in London
- Nash Metropolitan automobile
- Metropolitan, a 1935 movie directed by Richard Boleslawski
- Metropolitan, a 1990 movie directed by Whit Stillman
- Metropolitan band an indie rock group from Washington, D.C.
- Transmetropolitan, a comic book series.
- Metropolitan University, renamed Polytechnic insitutions in the United Kingdom after they were given university status in 1992, e.g Manchester Metropolitan University.
