Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington

Encyclopedia : M : ME : MET : Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington

The Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington was a metropolitan borough in the County of London between 1900 and 1965 when it became part of the London Borough of Hackney.

It included what is now considered to be just the western part of the district of Stoke Newington. A large area of modern Stoke Newington was assigned to the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney, including the Common and the entire eastern side of Stoke Newington High Street - these areas were already part of the neighbouring parish of Hackney, not Stoke Newington and, at the time, much of the area, particularly around Rectory and Amhurst Roads, would have been regarded as being a part of Shacklewell. Modern Stoke Newington has come to mean the N16 postcode area, so this western area has now been absorbed, largely at the expense of Shacklewell.

The borough also included parts of Manor House and Stamford Hill. It bordered the metropolitan boroughs of Islington and Hackney, as well as Middlesex to the north.

Like most British local authorities of the 1950s-60s, Stoke Newington possessed its own nuclear shelter. It is still there, though disused now except for storage. Shown here is the entrance still visible at the back of the town hall (September 2005)
