Miami Vice (film)
Encyclopedia : M : MI : MIA : Miami Vice (film)
Miami Vice is a 2006 American film adaptation of the 1980s TV series of the same name taking place in modern time rather than the 80s. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell will star as Tubbs and Crockett. The film will be directed by Michael Mann. Miami Vice is also notable for being one of a small but growing contingent of films that are shot digitally, a medium which Mann had previously used to great effect on Collateral, which also stars Foxx. Due to filming during Florida's hurricane season, many scenes had to be re-shot, postponed or re-written. This caused a blown budget of what some insiders claimed to be over $150 million. Universal Studios denies the rumor, saying the film only reached $135 million. [link]
Plot summary
After a tragic security breach in the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force (JIATF), the FBI ask for help from the Miami authorities, who are not part of the compromised group. This assignment goes to Detectives James 'Sonny' Crockett and Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs. Going undercover as offshore boat racers and outlaw smugglers Sonny Burnett and Rico Cooper, they take on the narcotrafficking network of the mysterious Archangel de Jesus Montoya-Londono and his Cuban Chinese banker Isabella. The intensity of the case pushes Crockett and Tubbs out onto the edge where identity and fabrication become blurred, where cop and player become one — especially when Crockett falls for Isabella, and when there is an assault on Tubbs's loved ones.

Trivia
- The first teaser trailer to appear for the film featured the Linkin Park/Jay-Z song "Numb/Encore".
- For a short time before its release, the official website hosted the first teaser trailer for download as a High-Definition WMV download.
- Miami Vice, shot on location in the Caribbean and South Florida, lost seven days of filming to hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.
- Gunshots heard outside of the film's Dominican Republic set on October 24, 2005 caused the crew to delay filming for three days. After these shootings, Jamie Foxx refused to return to the Dominican Republic, forcing director Michael Mann to re-write the ending of the film. Some crew members were frustrated with this, claiming the original ending to be "much more dramatic."[link]
- When Miami Vice completed filming, Colin Farrell entered into rehab for exhaustion and dependency on prescription medication. The medication had been prescribed to him after he suffered a back injury while filming Alexander.
- According to a Euroweb [article] Tubbs' suits were designed by famous fashion designer, Ozwald Boateng. He had worked with Jamie Foxx in the past and caught Mann's eye who then asked him to work on the movie.
- The RZA was hired to do the films score, but was later replaced with Organized Noize.
- The sunglasses worn by Colin Farrell are the "Slam" model made by Sama Eyewear.
- The filming of the movie is met with great conflict as several crew members criticized Michael Mann's techniques when he would repeatedly make sudden script changes, film in unsafe weather conditions, and in areas that "even the police avoid, drafting gang members to work as security." [link]
- Jamie Foxx was also reported as being unpleasant to work with on the set of Miami Vice, mostly for his ego. Foxx refused to fly commercially, forcing Universal to give him a private jet. After gunshots were fired on set in the Dominican Republic, Jamie packed up and refused to return. While crew members were pleased with Colin Farrell's dedication to the role, they were less enthusiastic about Foxx who would not participate in scenes on boats or planes. Problems occured early when Jamie complained that co-star Colin Farrell was being paid more, despite Foxx being an Academy Award winner. This resulted in Foxx's salary increasing while Farrell's being cut. [link]
