Encyclopedia : M : MI : MIC : Michael Tunn

Michael Tunn (born January 18, 1974) is an Australian radio announcer and television presenter. He was youngest on air radio presenter in Australia at the time of his appointment to the national youth station, Triple J in the early 1990s. He is best known for hosting Triple J's evening request program RequestFest (now called Super-Request, hosted by Rosie Beaton) between 1992 and 1997, and was also the host of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's TV program The Afternoon Show during the early to mid 1990s.

He was also a big supporter of local music, credited with discovering Silverchair in their early days, playing the song against station policy, which did not allow the playing of demos without distrubution deals. He was also credited with the discovery of Grinspoon who were the first winners of Triple J Unearthed.

After spending a year at the Brisbane offices of Triple J, he moved on to join the team of bigfatradio.com, an online radio station that used proprietary web page streaming technology so that the end user was able to view pages sent from the studio. The station featured many big named djs including Angela Catterns and Helen Razer.

After the collapse of the venture in the Dot-Com bubble burst, he joined the Austereo network and became the Assistant Program Director and Afternoon Presenter of Triple M Adelaide.

On 28 March 2006 Tunn arrived at the studio of Triple M to discover that his contract had been terminated, effective immediately. Tunn was at the time facing charges over an allegation of offensive behaviour incident earlier in the year. The case is still in a pre-trial phase; at the second last pre-trial conference the police admitted that they would have great trouble proving at least one of the charges he faced.

Triple M denied that his termination was linked to the court matter, and the two parties have now settled out of court, with the terms of settlement confidential.

Michael has recently taken up the position of Music Director at ABC Radio in Darwin.
