Middle Common Room
Encyclopedia : M : MI : MID : Middle Common Room
The term Middle Common Room (MCR) is used in some British universities, especially Oxford and Durham, to refer to the body of postgraduate students (similar to a students' union) at a constituent college. The equivalent body for undergraduate students is the Junior Common Room (JCR), and indeed MCR members are often also members of the JCR. The term "MCR" can also refer to a physical room or set of rooms set aside for the use of MCR members.
In Oxford other names are sometimes given to the MCR: at Christ Church, Jesus and Templeton, the term "Graduate Common Room" is used; Brasenose has the "Hulme Common Room"; Univ. has the "Weir Common Room".
At Cambridge the term Middle Combination Room is often used. This has essentially the same meaning as above, and is also abbreviated to MCR.
