Midnight Club is a series of racing games developed by Rockstar San Diego, highlighting street racing. Formerly known as Angel Studios, Rockstar San Diego developed the Midtown Madness games, which are strikingly similar to their brother Midnight Club series, having the same wide open racing format throughout huge metropolitan areas.
Midnight Club: Street Racing
Midnight Club: Street Racing is a racing simulation, which was designed to mimic the feel of the The Fast and the Furious movies (see: Import Scene). The player started off with a relatively plain and slow car and through a series of races (each with different goals) they defeat other racers to win faster and better looking cars. Players were able to race through New York City and London, England.
The game suffered from a number of bugs and glitches in its object modeling and graphics, but these glitches were not unusual for PlayStation 2 launch titles. The game featured a "Capture the Flag" mode (for both single- and multi-player) that received praise.
Midnight Club II
Midnight Club II was the followup to Midnight Club: Street Racing, published for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC. Players raced through cities inspired by Los Angeles, Paris, and Tokyo. Midnight Club II alse featured an online component.
Dry hilly suburbs and congested interstates could be found throughout Los Angeles, and just like the previous Midnight Club game, the city was littered with landmarks, such as the infamous Hollywood Sign, the Capitol Records Tower, and the Los Angeles River. The same was true for Paris; home to cobblestone alleyways, monumental roundabouts, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Notre Dame Cathedral. Tokyo was represented as a city of neon-glittering avenues and tight alleyways. The city contained Tokyo City Hall, Tokyo Tower, and Asakusa Kannon Temple.
The vehicles in Midnight Club II all resembled real world vehicles, such as the Jersey XS, which resembled a Dodge Viper, the Victory, which resembled an Aston Martin Vanquish, and the Veloci, which resembled a Saleen S7. The Saleen S7 is used in Midnight Club 3 as a real car.
This installment of the series was heavily criticised for using many derogatory stereotypes for the racers in the game that were almost to the point of being racist. Another problem surrounding the game was that there were many cheat codes that were usuable in online gameplay, hindering the balance and fairness of online play. Furthermore, the game did not allow for the customization of vehicles.
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition was the third game released in the series. The third iteration put emphasis on vehicle customization. This time players were able to race through San Diego, Atlanta, and Detroit. For the this version of Midnight Club Rockstar games partnered with DUB Magazine and featured real licensed vehicles.
The reasons behind the use of fictional cars in Midnight Club and Midnight Club 2 was that at the time of those games release, few car manufacturers wanted to be associated with illegal street racing, and Rockstar wanted realistic car damage to be seen when racing in the game. With the success of the movie The Fast And The Furious, car manufacturers decided to license their cars for use in video games such as the series. However, some car manufacturers still refuse to appear in video games due to the aforementioned.
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix is a remixed version of Rockstar's street racing phenomenon for the game's Greatest Hits release. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix featurs all the cities, cars, and music from Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition while adding 24 new vehicles, a new city Tokyo (Which is actually Tokyo's map previously used in Midnight Club 2), newly-licensed music, new races, and battle maps. This version of the game allows the player to use the data on his or her memory card from the first version of Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition. Although problems still remain in the game (for instance the game can only hold up to 30 vehicles which limits players who desire to have all of the vehicles) and many glitches are still present, the release has been considered a sucess.
Midnight Club 4
The next iteration of the Midnight Club series is rumored to be in the works for one or more next-generation platforms, with portable versions also a possibility.External links
