Midquel

Encyclopedia : M : MI : MID : Midquel


A midquel is a neologism for a story that is neither a sequel nor a prequel nor an interquel, but which describes previously-undescribed events taking place during the chronology of the original story. It can be considered as "during this time" or "meanwhile".

Literature

Orson Scott Card's science fiction novel Ender's Game, which was followed by two midquels: Ender's Shadow and Shadow of the Hegemon, focusing on the adventures of Ender's friend Bean and his siblings, respectively.

C.S. Lewis' The Horse and His Boy which takes place entirely during Chapter 17 of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Mario Puzo's novel The Sicilian is a midquel to The Godfather, as it involves Michael Corleone during his exile in Sicily. The film, however, removes all references to the Corleone family.

Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead could be considered a midquel of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, taking place during the same time frame but from an exactly inverse perspective... the minor characters are the leads and Hamlet is a minor player.

In the Star Wars universe, the novel I, Jedi written by Michael A. Stackpole is a midquel to Kevin J. Anderson's Jedi Academy Trilogy.

Movies

Bambi II is a midquel for the original Bambi, portraying young Bambi's life from the death of his mother to his adult form.

The Lion King 1½ takes place before and during the events of The Lion King, focusing on Timon and Pumbaa rather than Simba.

is set during the events of Beauty and the Beast.

Tarzan II expands upon the childhood of Tarzan, as based upon the events shown in Tarzan.

Video games

Two expansion packs for the Half-Life video game, ' and ', can be considered midquels as they occur during the events of the original game, but with different player characters.

In the Fire Emblem video game series, is the midquel of . Thracia 776 takes place during the intermission of Seisen no Keifu.

for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance is in part a midquel for both Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, given some time-travelling aspects of the game.
