Miguel Corte-Real
Encyclopedia : M : MI : MIG : Miguel Corte-Real
Miguel Corte-Real (pron. IPA /mi.'gɛɫ 'koɾ.tɨ ʁi.'aɫ/) (c.1450 – (probably) 1502) was a Portuguese explorer.
He was the son of João Vaz Corte-Real and the brother of Gaspar Corte-Real. Gaspar disappeared near Newfoundland in 1501. Miguel set out an expedition to search for him, but he disappeared as well. It is believed that his expedition perished in a storm.
Some scholars believe that Corte-Real made inscriptions on Dighton Rock, along the Taunton River in what is today the U.S. state of Massachusetts. This interpretation assumes that Dighton Rock was, in fact, a crude padrao, or Portuguese claim marker.
