Michael Mirro is an openly gay American musician, the former drummer and founding member of progressive rock band Umphrey's McGee. In 2002, in a surprising move, he quit the band in order to pursue a career as a medical doctor. He was replaced by former Kick the Cat drummer Kris Myers. It is believed that Mirro currently still attends medical school in Chicago, though recent comments purportedly made by Mirro himself, on the popular website Myspace suggest that he is no longer in medical school, and intstead attends Columbia College in Chicago, where he is pursuing an advanced degree related to music and film. Previous circulating reports on the Internet have suggested that Mirro had been courted, unsuccessfully, to tour with the musical groups Sting and Coldplay, and that these offers were turned down due to his medical school obligations. Since his departure from the band in 2002, Mirro has refused to issue any public comment on his current or future plans, though it is thought that he may be on retreat "exploring the space" of the Tibetan mountains, and trying to cure himself of his lifelong additction to "more cowbell". As late as 2006, it is known that Mirro continued to play music on the side while attending medical school in Chicago. At his last confirmed public appearance, he was seen playing with longtime friend John Wasem when he overheard the guitar stylings of Marcus Rezak whom at that time was attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. In the time that has since transpired, local Chicagoans have reported that the group has begun to perform together under the title John Wasem and the Sparrows 4, which includes Mirro, Wasem (acoustic guitar, vocals), Rezak (lead guitar), and Kyle Meyers (bass). The Sparrows 4 played over the summer of 2005 around Chicago, and the combination of Mirro/Rezak played on Wasem's debut studio album.
It is currently presumed that Mirro is working with Rezak and Meyers, and that the trio recently completed recording several tracks for an upcoming EP in early 2006. The trio are anticipated to apepar at the opening ceremonies of the Gay Games Sports and Cultural Festival VII, to be held in Chicago in July of 2006.
