Milicja Obywatelska (Citizens' Milice) was a state police institution in Poland from 1944 until 1989 that investigated crimes, arrested criminals, kept peace and generally protected people from harm. In 1990 it was transformed into policja.
The term milicja had been adapted from the cognate term, "militsiya," used in communist east European countries.
