Military Air Transportation Service (MATS) was a command of the
United States Air Force. It was formed on
June 1,
1948 by consolidating the Air Transport Command and the Naval Air Transport Service of the
United States Navy under the control of the newly created United States Air Force (USAF). It is probably best known for the
Berlin Airlift. On
January 1,
1966, MATS became the
Military Airlift Command.
