The military forces of Japan have had a number of different names over time.

The Imperial General Headquarters was responsible for the overall conduct of the war. Prior to 1945, there were two separate services:

• Imperial Japanese Army
• Imperial Japanese Navy

After World War II, these were both dissolved, and replaced after 1954 by:

• Japan Self-Defense Forces
