Since the end of the United States occupation of Japan after the Second World War, the Japanese imperial military had been dissolved. These graphs present the ranks of the Japanese Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force which have replaced the imperial military since 1952. The 1938 - 1945 Japanese military ranks have been outdated since the end of World War II. The Self Defense Force breaks away from the Sino-centric tradition of non-branch-specified ranks, each SDF rank with respect to each service carry a distinguished Japanese title.
