Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC, Japanese: 総務省 SōmushōThe Japanese name for this ministry literally translates to "Province of Main Affairs". The term "province" is the Japanese equivalent of a Cabinet-level Department in western countries, and is not used as a term for subnational entities.) is one of ministries in the Cabinet of Japan. The English name Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications (MPHPT) was used prior to 2004.
The Ministry was created on January 6, 2001 by the merger of the Ministry of Home Affairs (自治省), the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT, 郵政省) and the Management and Coordination Agency (総務庁).
The current Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications (総務大臣) is Heizo Takenaka, who succeeded Taro Aso on October 31, 2005.
