The Ministry of the Environment (環境省; Kankyō-shōThe Japanese name for this ministry literally translates to "Province of Environment". The term "province" is the Japanese equivalent of a Cabinet-level Department in western countries, and is not used as a term for subnational entities.) of Japan was formed in 2001 from the 1971-established Environmental Agency. The minister is a member of the Cabinet and is chosen by the Prime Minister, usually from the Diet.
As of 2005, the minister is Koike Yuriko. See the list of ministers for former minsters.
