History

Minnesota Fighting Pike was an Arena Football League team that played one season 1996 in that league. The team played at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The team colors were green and gold.

The team was poorly supported by fans and poorly marketed. The Pike played home games over the summer, a time when Minnesotans wanted to be outdoors. The average attendance for the 7 home games was 8,894.

The roster was stocked with players who had played at the University of Minnesota or other Minnesota colleges and universities. Former Gopher Rickey Foggie was the quarterback and he struggled adapting his game to the Arena League after several years in the Canadian Football League. Once during the season he was benched in favor of Southwest State's Jeff Loots, who threw five interceptions in a game. Loots was playing on his third expansion Arena League team in the past three season. Another Pike player from Southwest State was Alvin Ashley.

Ray Jauch was the head coach. He was assisted by John Coatta Jr. on offense and Frank Haege on defense. (Haege went on to spend a decade coaching in the Arena League; Coatta is an assistant at a Twin Cities area high school).

The Pike's final game against of the season vs. the Memphis Pharaohs was played in Tupelo, Mississippi, because the Pharaohs were evicted from their arena. After the game, the team folded. There were no announcements or press releases; players left town and staff were stiffed for their final paychecks.
