- For fish, the word minnow can mean, in decreasing order of specificity:
- * The Eurasian minnow, Phoxinus phoxinus (Linnaeus, 1758)
- * Any, particularly small, fish of the family Cyprinidae
- * Fish of the family Galaxiidae, in particular those of genus galaxiid occurring in the Southern Hemisphere
- * Any small freshwater fish, in particular one used as bait by anglers
- Also for fish, in regional usage, it can refer to:
- * The stickleback, another type of freshwater fish (term used in parts of Britain)
- * The Danionins from south east Asia
- Minnow was also the name of the wrecked boat featured in the television series Gilligan's Island.
- Metaphorically, minnow can also refer to a sporting team who are extreme underdogs, such as a soccer or cricket team from a developing nation facing a dominant, established nation. Example, Bangladesh vs. Australia in cricket. Bangladesh would be considered minnows in the contest.
