Minor Dark wizards in Harry Potter
Encyclopedia : M : MI : MIN : Minor Dark wizards in Harry Potter
This article is about minor Dark wizards from the Harry Potter series. See Lord Voldemort and Death Eater for further selections.
Alecto and Amycus
Alecto and Amycus are siblings (sister and brother, respectively) who participated in the assault on Hogwarts school. Amycus is described as being squat and lumpy-looking, with a lopsided leer and a wheezy giggle. They are possibly "the Carrows" mentioned by Snape in the second chapter.
Amycus is a hero in Greek mythology. Alecto is one of the Furies, the Greek goddesses of revenge.
Avery
There are two Death Eaters named Avery--one may be the other's father. Sirius Black mentions that an Avery was one of Snape's friends in Hogwarts, and there was also one in Tom Riddle's class. The same applies for the Lestranges and Rosier.
One Avery has known Voldemort since Hogwarts. Another, the one we know the most about, was also a Death Eater during Voldemort's first reign of terror, but avoided being brought to justice by saying he was acting under the Imperius Curse. After he rose again, Voldemort punished Avery with the Cruciatus Curse due to the man flinging himself at Voldemort's feet and begging forgiveness.
His luckless streak continued -- he was tortured at least once more by Voldemort, the second time occurring in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Augustus Rookwood debunked the information Avery had given Voldemort concerning Broderick Bode being able to take the prophecy from the Department of Mysteries.
He participated in the Department of Mysteries battle and was paired up with Walden Macnair. Whether he was the baby-headed Death Eater or not is in contention -- he also could have been in the Brain Room or Planet Room. As a result, it is not known if he made his way to the Death Chamber or not.
Whatever the case, he was apphrehended at the Department of Mysteries and afterward sent to Azkaban.
The Carrows
The Carrows are two Harry Potter characters who are Death Eaters. Their first names are unknown, however they could possibly be the siblings Alecto and Amycus. They are two of the Death Eaters mentioned by Severus Snape in the second chapter of Half-Blood Prince. They were said to have been amongst those who believed that Lord Voldemort was gone forever.
Crabbe Sr.
Crabbe Sr., little is known about him except that he's a Death Eater and Vincent Crabbe's father. Mentioned by Lord Voldemort during his "rebirth". In the raid on the Ministry of Magic, he was defeated and imprisoned. He possibly was the baby-headed Death Eater.Antonin Dolohov
Antonin Dolohov was one of the five Death Eaters who murdered Gideon and Fabian Prewett, who were Molly Weasley's brothers. He also tortured many Muggles and opponents of Voldemort during the first war. Dolohov was caught shortly after Igor Karkaroff, who named him during his own trial. He was sent to Azkaban, but escaped during the mass breakout of January 1996. He fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban prison. Because of his name, which is most likely Ukrainian, he could possibly be a graduate of Durmstrang.
During the battle, he proved that he was one of the most dangerous Death Eaters. He single-handedly defeated Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Neville Longbottom at one time. He later in the battle got caught and was sent to Azkaban.
Dolohov is a character from the War and Peace novel by Leo Tolstoy. Dolohov from the War and Peace is brave but rude, cruel and violent towards most people, but at the same time very loving and caring towards his mother and sisters. Antonin is typically either a French or Italian name.
Gibbon
Gibbon was a Death Eater who participated in the assault on Hogwarts school and set off the "Dark Mark". He was hit by a Killing Curse fired accidentally by the "enormous blond" Death Eater.
Goyle Sr.
Goyle Sr., little is known about him except that he's Gregory Goyle's father and a member of the Death Eaters and is currently at large. He was mentioned at Lord Voldemort's "rebirth".Fenrir Greyback
Fenrir Greyback is the most vicious werewolf alive. He considers it his purpose in life to contaminate others with lycanthropy. Children are preferred, as he can then abduct them and raise them to hate normal humans, but he ultimately wishes to convert as many people as possible. Fenrir is also a cannibal, as he enjoys eating human flesh when he isn't in his transformed werewolf state. He is on Lord Voldemort's side in the Second War.
Draco Malfoy claims to have connections with Greyback; he is "an old friend of the family." He uses Greyback to threaten Mr. Borgin in order to allow Death Eaters into Hogwarts: however, almost ironically, when the Death Eaters do come for the Battle of Hogwarts, Malfoy is horrified to find that Greyback is among them. It seemed that Greyback was a monster so terrifying that Malfoy feared what he could do; he had not intended for the "attack" to go that far.
Greyback will often attack the children of people who refuse to cooperate (with him personally, or with the Death Eaters in general), and it was for this reason that he contaminated Remus Lupin. During the Second War, a young boy with the surname of Montgomery (whose elder sisters are at Hogwarts) was attacked by a werewolf, presumably Fenrir Greyback, and was killed, after his mother had refused to help the Death Eaters. Werewolf victims usually survive (as werewolves), but are sometimes killed if the werewolf gets carried away.
At the Battle of Hogwarts, Greyback struck viciously--he had bitten Bill Weasley (when he had not transformed, so Bill will not turn into a werewolf). He left Bill barely recognizable, and Lupin noted that it was an extraordinary case and "they might notice wolfish characteristics in him," such as his desire for rather rare meat.
Fenrir Greyback is named for the monstrous wolf Fenrir, whose release in Norse mythology heralds Ragnarok. The mythical Fenrir is the son of Loki (god of mischief and foster-brother of Odin) and the giantess Angrboda. He eventually kills Odin, who is then quickly avenged by his son Vidar. "Greyback" is an obvious reference to the grey fur of the average wolf. Greyback, towards the end of the battle, attempted to kill Harry, but Harry was able to place the Full Body Bind curse on him. It is assumed that he was one of the Death Eaters who was captured during the Battle of Hogwarts.
With Greyback captured, the werewolves who are loyal to Lord Voldemort are now leaderless, perhaps allowing Lupin to convince them to abandon their vicious ways, as Dumbledore wanted him to do in book six of the series.
Grindelwald
- redirect
It has been speculated that, since 1945 saw the end of World War II, there may be a connection between Grindelwald and Adolf Hitler and so it is possible that Grindelwald was head of the magical wing of the Third Reich, or even that Adolf Hitler was acting under the Imperius Curse. This is further supported by the fact that "Grindelwald" is a German-sounding name, "Wald" meaning "forest" in German. (Grindelwald is also a place in Switzerland where Richard Wagner—whom Hitler admired—lived.) Grendel was a monster in the epic poem Beowulf. Even one of Dumbledore's middle names is Wulfric, talking part of Beowulf's name. J. K. Rowling has since indeed indicated that there was a global wizarding war taking place at the same time as World War II and that the two fuelled each other. [link]
Some fanfiction authors try to expand Grindelwald's character, and to tie him in with the present-day characters. It is unclear whether Grindelwald will be significant in any way in the upcoming book, but Rowling has confirmed that he is dead.
It is speculated that Grindelwald could have met the young Dark wizard Voldemort (who would have been in his teens) prior to the former's defeat by Dumbledore. It is possible that Grindelwald used horcruxes.
It is also possible that Grindelwald is just a literary device to explain why good wizards did not interfere to stop the war - they were too busy with Grindelwald. A similar idea is used in comic books to explain why superheroes do not prevent real-world atrocities; they didn't end WW2 because someone cast a spell to keep them out of Europe, or they were on another planet during 9/11. This allows the author to present a consistent world that has allows both fantastic magic, as well as heroes who are not able to prevent all disasters.
Herpo the Foul
Herpo the Foul is a fictional character from the Harry Potter book series, created by J. K. Rowling. He was an ancient Greek Dark wizard who bred the first known Basilisk. He appears on Famous Wizard card number 4 and in the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them under "Basilisk". Herpo was also one of a short list of known Parselmouths (others include: Salazar Slytherin, Marvolo Gaunt, Morfin Gaunt, Merope Gaunt Riddle, Tom Marvolo Riddle, and Harry Potter.)
Herpo's name derives from the Greek "herpeton" which means "reptile" and/or "herpo" which is Greek for "to creep".
Jugson
Jugson fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban Prison.
Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange
Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange are a pair of Death Eaters. They are brothers, and Rodolphus is married to Bellatrix Lestrange. Alongside Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr., the two brothers aided in the torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom, driving both of them into insanity.
All three Lestranges were formerly imprisoned in Azkaban until their escape, along with several other Death Eaters.
Rabastan Lestrange was mentioned by Sirius Black as having been among Severus Snape's "friends" at Hogwarts. A Lestrange was also part of Tom Marvolo Riddle's class. This Lestrange is most likely the father of Rodolphus and Rabastan.
Rabastan and Rodolphus are described in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as "a thickset man who stared blankly up at Crouch" and "a thinner, more nervous-looking man whose eyes were darting around the crowd," though no indication is given as to which was which.
Near the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, a message signed R.A.B. is found. Some have interpreted these initials as "Rodolphus And Bellatrix"; however the writer refers to him/herself in the singular and it is highly unlikely that either Lestrange would try to destroy a horcrux. While not all theories on R.A.B.'s identity involve the Lestrange family, another guess is that these initials mean "R.A.B"astan (Rabastan) Lestrange. It is considered most likely that R.A.B. is actually Regulus A. Black, a member of the Lestrange/Black family. See Bellatrix Lestrange for more details.
Walden Macnair
Walden Macnair is a Death Eater who also has a job within the Ministry of Magic as an executioner for the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures, and was assigned with the task of executing Buckbeak in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He also served as one of Lord Voldemort's envoys to the giants, and it seems he helped to persuade them to join forces with the Death Eaters. He also fought in the battle in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and was wounded by Neville Longbottom when Neville poked Hermione Granger's wand through the eyehole in his Death Eater mask.
Mulciber
Mulciber fought in the battle in the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban. He was originally captured before Igor Karkaroff came to trial, but escaped in the mass breakout of January 1996. He is noted as a specialist in the Imperius Curse. Mulciber is the latin word for "melter", and was used as a name for the Roman god Vulcan (first by Vergil). Furthermore Mulciber is the name of one of the fallen angels in John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost.
Nott
Nott is the father of Theodore Nott, a Slytherin student at Hogwarts, in Harry's year. Rowling mentioned on her website that he is an elderly widower. Nott was a Death Eater and after Lord Voldemort's fall, he wormed his way out of Azkaban, but joined him when he rose again in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Nott was involved in the battle in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and was injured. After being stunned by Hermione Granger, Lucius Malfoy ordered the rest of the Death Eaters to leave him there.
Augustus Rookwood
Augustus Rookwood was a spy in the Department of Mysteries during Voldemort's first rise to power. He was friends with Ludovic Bagman's father. Rookwood offerred Ludovic a job in the Ministry of Magic and acted as though he was aiding the anti-Voldemort cause. He gained information from many, Ludovic Bagman included, and had agents (many unwittingly) throughout the Ministry and Wizarding World.
Igor Karkaroff named Rookwood during his own trial, and Rookwood was sent to Azkaban but escaped in the mass breakout of January 1996.
After his escape, Rookwood returned to Voldemort, and informed him that Avery's information about Bode being able to take the prophecy was incorrect; since Rookwood was an employee of the Department of Mysteries, it can be inferred he helped much in the planning and intelligence required in the raid on the department.
Rookwood fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Lucius Malfoy had Rookwood working alone. As to what he did during this is sketchy at best, but it is known he most likely did not meet up with any of the children. He was at the Death Chamber battle, where he was seen duelling with Kingsley Shacklebolt and most likely casting the death curse.
He is currently in Azkaban prison.
In his mugshot in the Daily Prophet, Rookwood is described as having a pockmarked face, greasy hair, and looking bored.
Evan Rosier
Evan Rosier (d. 1980) was killed by Aurors, shortly after Igor Karkaroff's capture. While resisting arrest he took a big chunk out of Mad-Eye Moody's nose in the process. Sirius Black recalls him as one of Snape's friends.
Evan is Greek and means "of noble birth," appropriate for a typical Death Eater with pure-blood prejudices. Rosier is the name of a fallen angel (formerly holding the rank of Dominion in the angelic hierarchy). This demon may appear as either a man or a woman, and is a kind of patron devil of tainted love and seduction. The demon Rosier, is especially noted for assuming a human form of great physical beauty, and tempting humans to fall in love, so that they will therefore sin or act foolish.
As the maiden name of the mother of Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks, and Narcissa Malfoy was Druella Rosier, it is possible that Evan Rosier is a relative, most likely their cousin.
Travers
Travers was a Death Eater, who, according to Karkaroff, killed the McKinnons. He may be the "brutal-faced" Death Eater seen during the Battle of Hogwarts. In Igor Karkaroff's trial scene, Barty Crouch notes that "Travers and Mulciber, we have"; as Mulciber is later seen participating in the Second War, it is likely that Travers, having been spoken of in the same vein, also survived and escaped. He may have been one of the escapees in the mass breakout of January 1996.
Wilkes
Wilkes (d. 1980) was a Death Eater killed by Aurors.
Yaxley
Yaxley was, according to Snape, one of the Death Eaters who thought Voldemort to be dead. He may be the "enormous blond" Death Eater or the "brutal-looking" Death Eater in Book 6. He may be related to Lysandra Yaxley, mother of Callidora, Cedrella, and Charis Black, which would also make him a distant relative of the Longbottoms, Weasleys, and Crouches.
