The town is a civil parish, which according to the 2001 census had a population of 18,621. It had been an urban district from 1894 to 1974, when it was merged into the metropolitan borough of Kirklees. It gained a parish council again in 1988.
The 13th century St. Mary's Church was rebuilt by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
It is the birthplace of Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard in , and of cyclist Brian Robinson, the first Briton ever to win a stage of the Tour de France.
Roger Moore of James Bond fame was once a resident of the village. Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith, who was born in nearby Morley, lived in Mirfield from 1858 to 1860, when he was between the ages of 6 and 8 years. More recently, rugby league star Robbie Paul has moved to the area.
There are two secondary schools in Mirfield: Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form and Castle Hall. Amongst the primary schools there are Battyeford and Crossley Fields (formerly Wellhouse).
The Mirfield Theological College, the College of the Resurrection was where Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, lectured from 1976 for two years. Archbishop Trevor Huddleston spent his last days in Mirfield at the Community of the Resurrection.
