The park links no less than eight historical, natural, and cultural sites in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area, including Fort Snelling. Nearly all of the sites are privately owned and managed; the National Park Service owns just 35 acres (0.14 km²) out of the nearly 54,000 acres (218.5 km²) protected by the park.
