He was born in Kolkata and educated at the Scottish Church College, Calcutta, where he studied B.Sc. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India. He started his film career in a Hindi film made by Mrinal Sen.Career
His first movie role was in the Bengali film Mrigaya in 1976. He then had a small role in the Hindi film Do Anjaane in the same year. He shot into national prominence with his films Suraksha, Taarana Patita, Wardat, Hum Paanch, Disco Dancer and Dance Dance and was at one time, regarded as a rival to Amitabh Bachchan with his countless films which showed him in an "angry young man" image which Bachchan was famous for. He received the coveted National Film Award for Best Actor for the three films. He also won the Filmfare Award for Jallad & Agneepath and has won many awards in India and abroad in the last 31 years.
Recent work
During the mid 1990s he shifted his focus from the mainstream cinema and went into developing his own movies. These movies were mainly targeted towards people whose social status can at best be described as modest.
He tried to pull out an industry out of this. Initially, he was successful, no doubt, but to have a sustained growth and returns he now needs to pull some other rabbit out of his hat.
In his heyday, earned a huge fan following as a 'dancing star', one who runs a parallel film industry from his South Indian abode of Ooty, is 'God' for a generation of audiences unaware of the Hrithik Roshans and the Sanjay Dutts of this world, who owns an entire chain of hotels in Ooty and one who, was the highest tax payer in the country for five consecutive years, from 1994 to 1999. He has done and continues to do social service all over India.
