Mixosaurus
Encyclopedia : M : MI : MIX : Mixosaurus
Mixosaurus is an extinct genus of diapsid reptile belonging to the ichthyosaur order. It was about 1 m (3 ft 4 in) long.
Mixosaurus was one of the first ichthyosaurs, and the very first one to actually resemble a fish (more primitive genera such as Cymbospondylus looked much more reptilian). It had developed a dorsal fin and is presumed to have also possessed a primitive caudal fin. Also, the finger bones in its fins were longer than normal (hyperphalangy), a feature also seen in later ichthyosaurs. Mixosaurus probably fed on small prey such as fish.
