History
Historically, after the Meiji Restoration, Hyuga Province was renamed Miyazaki Prefecture. See Abolition of the han system article for detailed discussion.Geography
Miyazaki Prefecture is located on the eastern coast of the island of Kyushu. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the south and east, Oita Prefecture to the north, and Kumamoto and Kagoshima Prefectures to the west.Cities

These are the towns and villages in each district.Mergers
(as of March 27, 2006)- On January 1, 2006 the villages of Nango, Saigo and Kitago from Higashiusuki District merged to form the new town of Misato.
- On January 1, 2006 the towns of Takajo, Takazaki, Yamada and Yamanokuchi from Kitamorokata District merged with the city of Miyakonojo to form the new city of Miyakonojo.
- On January 1, 2006 the towns of Tano and Sadowara from Miyazaki District and the town of Takaoka from Higashimorokata District merged into the city of Miyazaki.
- On February 20, 2006 the towns of Kitaura and Kitakata from Higashiusuki District merged into the city of Nobeoka.
- On February 25, 2006 the town of Togo from Higashiusuki District merged into the city of Hyuga.
- On March 20, 2006 the village of Suki from Nishimorokata District merged with the city of Kobayashi to form the new city of Kobayashi.
