Miyoshi clan

Encyclopedia : M : MI : MIY : Miyoshi clan

The Miyoshi clan of the Awa Province of Shikoku entered the Sengoku Period as retainers under that of the Hosokawa. The Miyoshi family was increasingly relied on due to the Hosokawa vying for control of the position of kanrei. During the contest for Kyoto, Miyoshi Yukinaga led his troops to participate, but ended up having to commit suicide during the year of 1520. Under his granson, Miyoshi Chokei, the clan met it's ultimate zenith. After Chokei's death during the year of 1564, the Miyoshi clan was then led by a group known as the "Miyoshi sanninshu", while competing against the Miyoshi retainer, Matsunaga Hisahide. During the year of 1565, the Miyoshi and the Matsunaga both became allies, and allied against that of Ashikaga Yoshiteru, placing Ashikaga Yosihide in the head of the shogun. After Oda Nobunaga forced the Miyoshi out of the Yamashiro Province during the year of 1568, the Miyoshi clan was eventually eradicted by that of Chosokabe Motochika, completely ending the clan.
