Mobile emitter

The mobile emitter is a device frequently used on . It was a portable holo-emitter, a piece of 29th century equipment that enabled the doctor to leave sickbay (which he previously could not leave, as it was the only place on the ship equipped with holographic generators except the holodecks). It was taken from an unscrupulous businessman, Henry Starling.

Starling (played by Ed Begley Jr.), was a 20th century computer tycoon who had acquired a 29th century Starfleet time ship when it was accidentally thrown back in time. Starling cannibalized technology from the ship to lead the computer revolution of the eighties and nineties as CEO of his own company, Chronowerx. The mobile emitter was in the 29th century time ship, which Starling used when he abducted the Doctor and forced him to work for Chronowerx. The Doctor was recovered by Voyager - along with the emitter, which the Doctor subsequently used to go anywhere he wished (he had previously been confined to Voyager's sickbay and the holodeck).

The mobile emitter continues to exist in Voyager's time; the "spoils of war" from their journey to the past. Originally, it was necessary for the Doctor's program to be directly downloaded into the emitter, but in recent times he has simply needed to place it on his left sleeve and he can freely depart sickbay. This, however, has been shown to be a disadvantage, as on some occasions the emitter was stolen by rogue holograms, although each time the Doctor was able to take it back.
