Monsieur Hulot's Holiday

Encyclopedia : M : MO : MON : Monsieur Hulot's Holiday

Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, also known as Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (UK) and Mr. Hulot's Holiday (US), is Jacques Tati's most famous film. Released in 1953, it introduced the pipe-smoking, well-meaning but clumsy Monsieur Hulot (played by Tati). The film shows M. Hulot's journey to his seaside holiday destination, and the chaos he causes during his stay.

The memorable jazz score is by Alain Romans. The location was the town of Saint-Marc-sur-Mer in the Loire-Atlantique region of France.

Rather than having a strong narrative, the film is a sequence of comic episodes involving Monsieur Hulot. The style is mainly visual, as is typical of Tati's films, although he recorded both a French and an English soundtrack. It was filmed in colour, but released in black and white. In many ways a tribute to silent film, there is a little dialogue, and sound effects include the usual seaside noises as well as blaring gramophone music and the explosions of fireworks which M. Hulot accidentally sets off.

M. Hulot also appeared in a number of Tati's later films, including Mon Oncle (1959) and Playtime (1967).
