Montenegrin independence referendum, 1992

Encyclopedia : M : MO : MON : Montenegrin independence referendum, 1992

The Montenegrin independence referendum of 1992 was the first independence referendum for Montenegrin independence. In this last referendum on remaining in Yugoslavia (from 2003 to 2006 the Federation of Serbia and Montenegro) in 1992, 95.96% of the votes were cast for remaining in the federation with Serbia, although the turnout was at 66% because of a boycott by the Muslim and Catholic minorities as well as a part of pro-independence Montenegrins. Proponents of independence claim that the poll was organized under undemocratic conditions, with widespread propaganda from the state-controlled media in favour of a pro-federation vote. The second Montenegrin independence referendum was held 14 years later, on May 21, 2006, and resulted in a 55.5% vote for independence.
