Monticello is a city in Piatt County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,138 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Piatt County[Geographic references#6GR6].

Monticello is located at (40.028092, -88.573003)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²), all land.

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 5,138 people, 2,146 households, and 1,446 families residing in the city. The population density was 665.7/km² (1,724.7/mi²). There were 2,226 housing units at an average density of 288.4/km² (747.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.01% White, 0.08% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.There were 2,146 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,754, and the median income for a family was $57,287. Males had a median income of $41,074 versus $24,130 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,257. About 2.3% of families and 3.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.6% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.
