Monton

Encyclopedia : M : MO : MON : Monton

Monton is a borough of the city of Salford. Its people are generally refered to a as Montonians and there are around 4,000 of them inhabiting the area. The centre of Monton is usually regarded as 'Monton Green', an area of natural beauty opposite the famous Bluebell public house. Monton lies between Swinton to the North, Eccles to the South and Winton to the west. Until the 1980s the area was in decline and it was only with opening of several restaurants on Monton Road that the decline was halted and money was brought into the area. The opening of Leo's Restaurant and Bistro 221 brought money to Monton as customers came from the surrounding area. The fine houses and upmarket shops are in sharp contrast to the surrounding areas which have largely fell victim to urban decay. Due to this a local village association know as the 'Republic' seeks greater autonomy from Salford City Council and other local governmental organisations. Some Montonians and members of the Republic believe they should be given a greater say in the running of Monton, its funding, utilities and housing. Such members believe Monton should be in control of its own destiny and not under the regulation of a bureaucracy allegedly unresponsive to its needs. Although vocal about the plans for the direction of Monton's future, the group currently does not have any influence. Although membership is small it is select, biased and, some would say, autocratic and backward looking. Only those sharing a "positive" view of Monton are admitted to the Republic. Current organisational structures include a President (in control of its major policy and charter) with various other posts occupied by other members concerning areas such as finance, entertainment, security and business. Due to its radical views regarding local government and the people of Monton, the local council is highly critical of it and dismisses any possiblity of Monton breaking away from the borough.
