Moore State Park is a Massachusetts state park located in Paxton. The forest is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Description
Moore State Park is a 400 acre park nestled in central Massachusetts.Features of the park include a numerous historical sites (principally foundations), a restored sawmill, and various ponds.
Abundant flora include azaleas, rhododendrons, and mountain laurel.
History
A portion of the land within Moore State Park was once the home to numerous 18th and 19th century mills that were powered by the cascading water of Turkey Hill Brook. The first mills built on the site were a gristmill and sawmill as early as 1747. It is speculated that as many as five separate mills may have been located here. The remnants of this mill village are still visible and include, in addition to the mills, a triphammer, quarry, school house, and tavern.
In the early 20th-century, the property became a private estate.
