Moria (StarCraft)

Encyclopedia : M : MO : MOR : Moria (StarCraft)

In the fictional StarCraft universe, Moria is a mineral-rich world located in the Koprulu Sector. The name is a reference to Tolkien's Lord of The Rings where Moria is the mine where the Fellowship is led after failing to pass through Mt. Caradhras, and where Gandalf the Grey faces the Balrog.

History

Doran Routhe of the United Powers League of Earth organized a colonization project in order to further his own power. He loaded 40,000 prisoners on four supercarriers, sending them to the planet Gantris VI. However, the guidance computer in the lead ship, the Nagglfar, failed, and the four ships barreled blindly through warp space for twenty eight years. As their warp drives began to melt down, they emerged in a habitable star system.

The original colonists of Moria arrived in the Argo, a vessel whose databanks were rendered inaccessible when it crashed on Moria.

Despite its wealth, Moria was behind Tarsonis in terms of technological development, mainly because Tarsonis had access to ATLAS, an artificial intelligence which contained great amounts of technological information from Earth. Furthermore, the Terran Confederacy based on Tarsonis was rapidly increasing its military power with its high technology and from forming new colonies.

The government of Tarsonis attempted to convince the other two colonies to join in a conglomerate government, but both Moria and Umoja refused.

Kel-Morian Combine

Two shady mining guilds, the Kelanis Guild and the Morian Mining Coalition, formed the Kel-Morian Combine, a group which looked out for Morian mining interests. The Confederates reacted with the Guild Wars which ended with the defeat of the Kel-Morian Combine, about 20 years before the StarCraft game begins.

The Kel-Morian Combine remained in charge of their world, however, and remained one of the three major Terran powers in the sector.

After the creation of the Terran Dominion it joined as a member planet[#endnote_BWmanual].

Moria was untouched by the events of the original StarCraft, but in the [[StarCraft: Brood War|Brood War]] it had its first taste of war in a generation. When the United Earth Directorate defeated the Terran Dominion, the Kel-Morian Combine made a deal with the UED to avoid invasion.

During the Brood War Moria was invaded by Zerg, who were only there on a resource raiding run. However, Infested Kerrigan defeated several of their armies and infested many of their soldiers.
