Morningside, Edinburgh

Encyclopedia : M : MO : MOR : Morningside, Edinburgh

Morningside is an historically wealthy area in the south-west of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is near the areas of Bruntsfield, Boroughmuirhead (including Holy Corner), Church Hill and Marchmont. It is currently popular with students, and is near Napier University's Merchiston and Craighouse campuses.

Morningside residents are sometimes said to have a "pan loaf" accent, i.e. an affected one, in the same way that this is said of residents of Kelvinside in Glasgow. This is often the subject of jokes about a "Moarningsaide" accent. It is generally only older residents who have this accent today. These older people are also sometimes referred to as "Brodie-ish", after Maggie Smith's realisation of Muriel Spark's Miss Jean Brodie. In fact Muriel Spark lived in Jordan Lane, Morningside, as a child.

Other Morningside landmarks include the Morningside Clock, originally in the middle of the roadway as the clock for Morningside Station (part of the Suburban Railway Line); the Canny Man's pub (formerly The Volunteer) on the corner of Canaan Lane; Robert Main & Sons — a long-standing fishmonger's shop; and the Bore Stane, an ancient monument adjacent to the former Parish Church (now part of Napier University).

In children's literature, Morningside is the home of Maisie the kitten in the books by Aileen Paterson. Additionally it is the home of the authors J. K. Rowling, writer of the Harry Potter series of books, and Ian Rankin, author of the Inspector Rebus novels.
