Morristown is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 24,965 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hamblen County[Geographic references#6GR6].
Geography
Morristown is located at (36.210615, -83.296141)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 54.1 km² (20.9 mi²). Some of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 24,965 people, 10,270 households, and 6,531 families residing in the city. The population density was 461.2/km² (1,194.7/mi²). There were 11,036 housing units at an average density of 203.9/km² (528.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 83.73% White, 7.49% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 6.31% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.43% of the population.There were 10,270 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 31.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,005, and the median income for a family was $33,391. Males had a median income of $26,724 versus $20,515 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,894. About 14.6% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.9% of those under age 18 and 17.3% of those age 65 or over.
